Q: What should I expect?
A: Philosophy is far from narrowly defined, so there are few limits to philosophical coaching topics. There are a few things that you can expect, however. First, generally via email, you will schedule a 45-minute coaching session based on your coach’s availability and what is best for your schedule. Also, if you have specific topics and/or objectives on which you would like to focus, you are encouraged to inform us of them to help your coach prepare. You will then receive a telephone number to call, and when the time arrives for your appointment, you will call the number and get started (you can arrange for your coach to call you if you prefer). Your input with regard to your objectives will drive each session, and each session has the potential to be quite different from the last. Remember that you will not be given answers, but coaches will help you evaluate your reasoning, so it is a reasonable expectation for you to notice some changes in perspective as you continue. At the end of your call, you will discuss if you are going to do any “homework.” Homework is entirely voluntary and not required, but you may find that it makes your coaching sessions more productive. Finally, you will schedule your next session with your coach.
Q: Is philosophical coaching therapy?
A: No, though philosophical coaching can have therapeutic effects just as physical exercise can, it is not therapy. Philosophical coaching helps people to think more clearly about complex topics. A philosophical coach is much like a personal trainer, but instead of helping you exercise your physical muscles, you will be coached to exercise your mental muscles. Many people want background information from their coach on a philosophical problem. Other people want their coach to be a sounding board that will help them challenge and evaluate their reasoning. Philosophy can be theoretical and abstract, thought provoking but intangible, making life better in the way that an interesting puzzle makes life better, or it can be practical, pragmatic, and immediately applicable to problems that real humans face on a daily basis.
Q: What are the costs?
A: Costs are negotiable based on a number of factors, including electronic information sharing, the use of conference calling services, payments made in advance, and so on. Also, like any other specialized service, rates may vary from coach to coach. Costs generally begin at $6,000 for 4 sessions of approximately 45-60 minutes each.
An important question that you must answer for yourself regarding the costs of coaching services is: “What value do you place on your philosophical questions and goals?” This may not be the extent of why you want philosophical coaching, as some people may not know if their philosophical pursuits have any value or not, in which case another question might be appropriate, such as: “How much do I value exercising my brain and improving my quality of thinking?”
Q: Will my insurance cover the costs?
A: No, you will be working with professors of philosophy, and generally speaking insurance companies do not cover college or university tuition or any other costs of education.
Q: How do I apply?
A: Please see the Contact Us page.
Q: How many coaching sessions will I need?
A: The best number of coaching sessions for an individual varies depending on the nature, number, and depth of a person’s philosophical interests.
Q: Will I need to do anything between coaching sessions?
A: This is entirely up to you, but the more you put into your philosophical interest, the more you will get out of it. In the same way, exercising on your own is generally still beneficial even if you have a personal trainer.
Q: Will any of my contact information be sold or traded?
A: No, we will not trade or sell any of your contact information. The only reason we will use any of your contact information is for the sole purpose of interacting and conducting business with you.
